Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) is an advanced, non-invasive treatment that enhances the body's natural healing processes by delivering 100% oxygen at increased atmospheric pressure. HBOT supports and enhances the body's innate ability to heal and regenerate, making it a powerful tool for recovery and health optimisation. Administered at 2 atmospheres pressure, HBOT significantly increases oxygen delivery to tissues, supporting faster recovery following surgery and improving healing after ablative laser and Morpheus8 treatments.

By optimising oxygen availability in the blood and at a cellular level, HBOT reduces inflammation, accelerates tissue repair, and enhances overall recovery outcomes with no downtime.

More about this treatment

What is Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy?

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy is a medical treatment in which patients breathe pure oxygen within a pressurised environment. Normal pressure outside of a hyperbaric oxygen chamber is 1 atmosphere and the pressure within the chamber can reach up to 2 atmospheres. The lungs absorb more oxygen, which dissolves into the blood plasma. This process increases oxygen concentration in the blood, allowing significantly higher oxygen levels to reach tissues that may be compromised by surgery, trauma, or energy-based treatments.

This enhanced oxygen delivery supports cellular metabolism, angiogenesis (new blood vessel formation), collagen synthesis, and immune function, making HBOT particularly valuable for post-operative recovery and aesthetic treatment optimisation.

How Increased Oxygen Delivery Supports Healing

With hyperbaric oxygen therapy, the oxygen availability to the tissues is greater than under normal atmospheric conditions. This increased tissue oxygenation:

  • Accelerates wound healing and epithelial regeneration
  • Enhances fibroblast activity and collagen production
  • Promotes immune function to treat infection

These mechanisms are especially beneficial following surgical procedures, ablative laser resurfacing, and Morpheus8 treatments, where tissue repair and controlled inflammation are central to optimal results.

How Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy Works

During treatment, the patient rests comfortably while breathing 100% oxygen as the ambient pressure in the chamber is increased to between 1.3-2 atmospheres. Sessions typically last between 60 and 120 minutes. The therapy is a relaxing experience and pain free, allowing oxygen to saturate tissues throughout the body.

HBOT is a non-invasive therapy that supports the body’s innate ability to heal and regenerate, enhancing natural recovery processes. HBOT is frequently used as part of a recovery protocol, either immediately following surgery or in the days after ablative laser or radiofrequency treatments, to accelerate healing and reduce downtime.

Regular sessions can contribute to improved general health and overall wellness.

The Hyperbaric Chamber

The hyperbaric chamber is a safe and controlled pressurised environment where healing can truly begin. The chamber is engineered to withstand increased atmospheric pressure well above normal sea level

conditions. During each session, patients lie comfortably inside the chamber, breathing 100% oxygen through a mask. As the pressure is gradually elevated, the lungs are able to absorb more oxygen than would be possible at normal atmospheric pressure and allow a higher concentration of oxygen to dissolve into the blood. This increased concentration of oxygen is available to all the tissues, promoting tissue repair and accelerating healing. The process is entirely non-invasive, and the chamber’s design ensures a relaxing and comfortable experience for every patient. Extensive research has confirmed the safety and effectiveness of this advanced oxygen therapy, making the hyperbaric chamber an essential component in supporting the body’s natural ability to recover and rejuvenate.

What Results Are Typically Achieved

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy can deliver the following benefits:

  • Faster post-surgical recovery
  • Enhanced wound healing and scar quality
  • Improved skin regeneration following ablative laser treatments
  • Optimised healing and reduced downtime after Morpheus8
  • Improved overall tissue health and resilience
  • Supports post surgery recovery and healthy ageing
  • Promotes natural beauty and general health
  • Reduces premature ageing

Results are often most noticeable when HBOT is used as part of a structured recovery programme.

HBOT enhances recovery by boosting oxygen levels in blood plasma, which aids tissue repair and reduces inflammation. This process also enhances collagen production, helping to reduce signs of ageing and improve skin health.

Preparing for your treatment

Prior to Arrival

Minimal preparation is required. Patients should wear comfortable clothing and avoid alcohol prior to treatment. Your practitioner will review your medical history to ensure suitability.

On Arrival at Montrose

A clinical assessment will be undertaken, particularly focusing on recent surgery or energy-based treatments.

During the Treatment

Patients lie comfortably within the chamber while breathing pure oxygen. Pressure is gradually increased to a maximum of 2 atmospheres. Most patients experience a gentle pressure sensation in the ears, similar to flying, which is easily managed by equalisation.

Post Treatment Advice

  • Normal activities can be resumed immediately. There is generally no downtime after HBOT, and patients can return to their usual routine right after the session.
  • Stay well hydrated to support oxygen delivery and tissue recovery
  • Multiple sessions are usually required for optimal post-procedural outcomes
  • Regular hyperbaric oxygen therapy sessions can contribute to improved general health and support healthy ageing by promoting overall wellness and vitality.

Questions you may have

HBOT is suitable for individuals preparing for and recovering from surgery, ablative laser resurfacing, Morpheus8 treatments, or those seeking to optimise healing and reduce inflammation. It is especially beneficial for post-surgery recovery, supporting general health, and for patients prone to prolonged swelling or slower wound healing.

This therapy is particularly advantageous for people with chronic conditions that impair circulation or oxygen delivery to tissues, such as diabetes or vascular disease. Athletes and active individuals may also benefit from HBOT to support muscle repair, reduce fatigue, and enhance recovery. Additionally, those experiencing cognitive function challenges, brain fog, or neurological conditions may find HBOT helpful as part of a broader wellness journey aimed at promoting healing, general health, and enhancing the body’s ability to heal and recover.

Individuals with untreated pneumothorax, certain lung conditions, or active ear or sinus infections may not be suitable. Pregnant individuals and those with specific contraindications such as severe claustrophobia or certain types of collapsed lung should avoid HBOT. Medical professionals will conduct an initial consultation to evaluate each patient’s health status and determine suitability, ensuring safety throughout the treatment journey.

The treatment is a relaxing experience. Patients may feel pressure changes in the ears, similar to air travel, which usually resolves quickly.

Many patients describe the experience as a comfortable environment and whilst patients are not allowed to use electronic devices such as mobile phones or earphones in the chamber, they find the session relaxing. During the session, trained staff monitor patients closely to maintain comfort and safety.

A pre-procedural session of HBOT is often recommended, and for post-surgical or post-ablative treatments, a short course of multiple sessions over several days is often necessary for optimal results. Protocols are tailored to the procedure and individual healing response.

Typically, patients undergo daily sessions for acute recovery phases, with the total number of HBOT sessions depending on the specific condition and wellness goals. The cumulative effect of multiple HBOT sessions enhances the body’s innate ability to repair and regenerate, leading to optimal results in skin health, tissue repair, and overall rejuvenation.
